Susie Cotter winner sends unstoppable Ards seven points clear at top of the Ulster Premier hockey league… round-up, results and standings

Susie Cotter

SUSIE Cotter’s winner propelled Ards to a seven point lead at the top of the Legacy Wealth Management Ulster Premier League as they came from behind to beat Lurgan 2-1 at the College grounds.

Lydia McNeill had given the home side the lead with her seventh goal in eight games.

But Ards have an in-form goalscorer of their own in Zara Malseed who equalised to complete a bountiful week, adding to the two goals she netted midweek against Belfast Harlequins.

While Ards look unstoppable, the defeat leaves Andy Brown’s Lurgan in fourth place in the table as their three-game winning run came to an end.

Elsewhere, a Kate Spillane double helped Mossley beat visitors Armagh 2-0 at The Glade.

Both goals came in the second half, Kate’s first from a penalty corner and the second from a tap-in at the back post, taking her tally to four goals in her last five league games.

Mossley move level on points with fourth placed Lurgan and just five points outside the EYHL2 qualification places.

It was Armagh’s sixth defeat of the season.

At the same time, Larne moved six points clear of the relegation playoff place as they beat Omagh 1-0, courtesy of Katie Allen’s first goal of the season, leaving the Tyrone side bottom while Larne ended a run of seven games without a league win.

The highest scoring game of the weekend saw Lisnagarvey make it back-to-back wins as they thrashed Ballymoney 6-1 at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre.

Goals from Rachel Cox, Jess Moore (2), Beth Ravey and Beth McFerran sealed the win despite a first goal of the season from Ballymoney’s Megan Kirgan.

Garvey have climbed  to second in the division, one point ahead of third placed Belfast Harlequins, but seven points behind runaway leaders Ards.
