Rising NI golf stars Annabel Wilson and Jessica Ross make Ireland team for Spanish challenge

LURGAN’S Annabel Wilson (above) and Jessica Ross (below) of Clandeboye, two of NI golf’s most promising young stars, are included in an eight strong Ireland squad bound for the international Women’s Octagonal Matches, taking place from February 14-17 at Costa Ballena, Spain. Helen Jones, of Royal Portrush, is team manager.

The six countries competing alongside Ireland are Austria, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain, with the hosts entering two teams.

The eight teams will be split into two groups of four (Red & Blue) to compete in a Round Robin style competition over the first three days. Once the Round Robin is completed, corresponding teams (i.e. 1st vs 1st) will play against one another on the final day to establish the final classification.

Each team will play one match per day, and the format of each day’s play will be four matches, consisting of three games of 18-hole foursomes in the morning and six games of 18-hole singles in the afternoon. For teams consisting of seven or eight players, rotation of players between morning and afternoon games is allowed.

The Ireland team is as follows:

Anna Abom – Edmondstown

Olivia Costello – Roscommon

Kate Dillon – Oughterard

Kate Lanigan – Hermitage

Mairead Martin – Kanturk

Caoimhe O’Grady – Royal Dublin

Jessica Ross – Clandeboye
