‘It’s been a long time in the making and I can’t quite believe it’… Coleraine rower Hannah Scott wins gold for Team GB at Paris Olympics

COLERAINE rower Hannah Scott has won Gold at the Paris Olympics with Team GB.

Hannah was racing alongside fellow crew members Lauren Henry, Lola Anderson and Georgie Brayshaw in the women’s quadruple sculls.

The Great Britain’s women’s quadruples sculls crew claimed the gold in a dramatic race against the Netherlands.

The team made a cautious start before moving past Ukraine into second spot behind the Dutch.

The 2023 world champions produced a storming finish in the final 250 metres, edging out the Netherlands on the line by just 0.15 seconds.

Hannah’s success completes a hat-trick of golds in just 24 hours by Northern Ireland competitors after Daniel Wiffen, for Ireland, and Jack McMillan, for GB, topped the podiums in the pool on Tuesday night.

Prior to that, the last NI competitors to win gold were Jim Kirkwood and Stephen Martin for GB in the hockey at Seoul 1988 and the last individual gold medal achievement stretches further back to Lady Mary Peters in the Munich 1972 pentathlon, also with GB.

After stepping onto the pontoon, Scott told BBC Sport that the achievement would take a while to sink in.

“It’s been a long time in the making and I can’t quite believe it,” the 25-year-old said.

“I don’t even know if I’m emotional yet, that will come. We were so process-driven today and the immensity hasn’t struck me because I’ve been trying to play it really cool.

“We knew we had it, the confidence. We’ve done so many hard miles in training. For anyone out there, just go for it because if you think you can you might just one day and that’s the really cool thing about the Olympics.
