ALMOST summer like conditions greeted athletes in Lurgan Park for the Northern Ireland and Ulster Senior Cross Country Championships.

But the ground was still soft underfoot as a result of the previous week’s rain.

Roise Roberts (CNDR) has already proven this season that soft ground doesn’t faze her. She ran brilliantly at the end of last year in Irvinestown which meant she was selected to make her third European Cross Country Championships appearance in Turkey where she again had a strong run.

In Lurgan, Roise went with the pace in the early stages of the 6K race before powering away to an untroubled victory.

Second place went to Aoife McGreevy. In bronze was Lucy Foster, the first scorer for Willowfield Temperance Harriers, and she led her club-mates to a team victory!

The other three Willowfield scorers were her sister Kirsti, Emily Morris and then another Foster sibling, Kari… a very young team that coach Lawson Cochrane is enthusiastic about for the future.

Willowfield also won the women’s Senior Northern Ireland and Ulster Road Relay Championship in September 2024.

It was a dominant team effort by Willowfield, they finished 31 points clear.
