ROYAL Portrush golfer Laura Webb says winning in Spain is the ideal start to the season as she finished joint-top of the standings in the Spanish Senior Women’s Amateur over the weekend.
The former Irish Senior Women’s Amateur winner, who lost last year’s Irish Senior Women’s Amateur Close decider to Tracy Eakin (Dooks), was awarded the title alongside Franca Fehlauer-Lutter.
The German shot rounds of 76 and 77 but that was matched by 80 and 73 from Webb before poor weather cut the tournament short.
“It was nice to be able to go and compete against my European counterparts and it’s nice to start the season off so well,” said Laura.
“Hopefully that will mean I can keep going and get some good results in Ireland at our championships. Certainly, gives me some confidence for the upcoming season.”
Laura began her week playing alongside Sheena McElroy, while Tracy Eakin, Alison Taylor, Gertie McMullen and Lisa Cullen were also involved at Sherry Golf Jerez.
Laura was playing catch up after her first round but some impressive putting ensured she bounced back for a great season opener.
“My first round was a case of near misses really. And then in the second round the putter worked really properly and I managed to hole some putts,” said Laura .
“I am absolutely delighted to win.”
