New NI captain Simone Magill is excited at prospect of Norway play-off

Northern Ireland booked their place in the final with a 2-1 aggregate win over Croatia at the round one stage, while the Norwegians defeated Albania 14-0 on aggregate in their round one play-off.

Norway are currently ranked 16th in the world, while Northern Ireland are in 45th place in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings.

That means Tanya Oxtoby’s team will go into the games in Belfast and Oslo later this month and in early December as underdogs.

Norway, who are previous European Championship winners, defeated Northern Ireland twice in Women’s Euro 2022 qualifying and at the final tournament in England.

However, following last month’s 1-0 win over Croatia in Belfast, Northern Ireland captain Simone Magill said it was “really exciting” to be just two matches away from a place at the Euros.

“We’ve done it before, we’ve been underdogs our whole lives. We’re going to be so hungry and driven to get back there again,” she insisted.

And the skipper added: “When you are the favourites then the pressure is all on you and that brings a new set of challenges. That may work in our favour because we know the pressure is all on Norway in the next two games. It’s up to us to go and spoil the party.”
