AN Ireland indoor hockey women’s development squad have returned from Copenhagen with a silver medal from a three-day tournament, the Mason Cup, in preparation for the 2026 EuroHockey Indoor Championships.
Competing against sides from across Europe, the women’s perfomance underlined the ever increasing strength of Irish Indoor Hockey.
And, in addition to the silver medal, following defeat by hosts Copenhagen in the final, Corinthian and Ireland Outdoor Pathway international Hollai Quinn returned home with the top scorer award with an exceptional nine goals in four matches.
Following an early flight into the Danish capital on the tournament opening day, the women did well to claim a victory in dramatic fashion in their first pool game.
Local side Copenhagen scored three quickfire goals to seize control of the match. However, with just 14 minutes on the clock, Ireland turned the game around with Hollai Quinn grabbing a hat trick and Paula Oldenkott also getting on the scoresheet to turn the game around, winning 4-3.
That put the women in a commanding position going into Day 2, with a place in the semi-finals up for grabs. Following another close contest, against Club sur Vahr from Germany, a narrow 4-3 defeat was the final outcome, with Hollai Quinn netting twice, and Micaela Sanderson opening her account. However, the side had done enough to secure their place in the semis.
Orient Lyngby of Denmark were the opposition and Hollai Quinn continued her goalscoring form, grabbing a brace to give Ireland a 2-0 lead at half-time. Quinn completed her hat-trick, seeing Ireland progress to the final with a 3-1 victory.
Local side Copenhagen were Ireland Women’s opposition in Sunday’s final. Another exceptionally close game unfortunately didn’t go Ireland’s way on this occasion. Hollai Quinn scored her ninth goal of the tournament, while Micaela Sanderson and Maebh Le Roux also netted. But Copenhagen came away as victors in the end, winning by just a single goal and taking gold with a 4-3 win.
