Revealed: double coup by Pegasus with top coach Jonny Caren appointed new Director of Hockey and legend Shirley McCay becomes Club Captain in huge statement of intent

Former player, and now club official, Lynsey Mallon welcomes Jonny Caren to Pegasus

AMBITIOUS Pegasus Ladies Hockey Club, aiming for a return to their glory days, have delivered an early signal of their intent for next season and beyond with the appointment of Jonny Caren, the Scotland Men’s National Coach and Programme Lead, as its new Director of Hockey.

It’s a pioneering move that marks the club’s continued commitment to excellence and evolution.

And making it a double coup, club legend and Irish record caps holder Shirley McCay has been appointed Club Captain in an anticipated playing role.

On the coaching side, Dundonald man Caren, an internationally respected coach with over two decades of experience at the elite level of the game, brings a wealth of knowledge and innovation to Pegasus. 

His leadership with the Scottish men’s side and extensive coaching background in performance development and high-performance sport make him uniquely positioned to guide Pegasus into a new era. 

Jonny has made a notable impact as Head Coach and Programme Lead of the Scotland men’s national programme since his appointment, with his strategic insight, coaching pedigree and innovative player development.

This landmark appointment signifies Pegasus’s commitment to long-term strategic growth and excellence at all levels of the club.

The new Director of Hockey role will oversee player development pathways, coaching structures, community engagement and performance strategies across both senior and junior club teams.

“This is a ground breaking moment for Pegasus – we are not just bringing in a new coach; we are bringing in a leader who will shape the future of our club at every level from the grassroots to the highest level. 

“Jonny’s arrival coincides with the appointment of Dr Shirley McCay MBE OLY as Pegasus Club Captain so this is a really exciting time for our club.”

Caren added: “It’s a great honour to join a club with such a rich tradition and passionate community. Pegasus has always been a benchmark in Irish hockey and I look forward to the opportunity to shape a holistic hockey programme and to support the club’s players and coaches across all stages of development.”

Pegasus has long been a leader in the sport, with a rich legacy of national titles and international representation. The creation of this new role reflects the club’s ambition to set new standards, to invest in the next generation of talent and to ultimately drive hockey forward in the region. 

Club chair, Dr Michelle Rainey, confirmed: “This is a pivotal moment for the club and we are excited for what lies ahead. Jonny’s appointment reflects our ambition to innovate , grow and support our players and coaches at every stage, from minis to seniors. 

“We are also delighted to welcome Arlene back to Pegasus – one of the most highly respected figures in Irish hockey. Her experience and leadership will have a vital influence on Pegasus Hockey Club’s culture and ambition going forward.”
