How did you first get involved in Taekwon-Do?
I first got involved in Taekwon-Do because my cousin wanted to do something that wasn’t Gaelic football. GAA is the only sport around my area that people take part in. So I went along with him to his first class as moral support … 13 years later I’m still at it and loving it.
Can you even begin to describe what it’s like to become Irish and European Champion?
Becoming European and Irish Champion is something that cannot be replicated. It comes with immense pride and gratitude. It makes it all worth it when your hard work pays off and you get the results you wanted. It makes me motivated to keep working hard and train 5x a week.
What is the build-up like for one of the tournaments, it must be a lot of hard work and pretty nerve-racking?
The build up to a competition is a lot of hard work and long days. Especially when I have a full time job, fitting in the gym, my own training and teaching Taekwon-Do can be a struggle. I normally do a 12 week camp to prepare for a competition. This involves training and diet. Nerves are normal but I know I have done everything to give myself the best possible chance at winning gold.
It’s safe to say you do a lot of travelling for competitions! Where is your favorite place you have been and also where would you like to compete in the future?
I have traveled near and far with Taekwon-Do. From England to Argentina to Korea. I love traveling and the experiences it brings. My favourite place so far has probably been Korea. It was surreal competing in the homeland of Taekwon-Do. It was cool to see all the history surrounding my sport. I have a few places left to be ticked off the bucket list, like America or Australia. No doubt I’ll get there someday.
Being 2023 European and Irish Champion there isn’t much you haven’t achieved, but what would be your goals?
My goals for the next few months is to get my 4th degree black belt. This has been years in the making. I would also like to become a World Champion in the Adult Women sparring category at the next World Championships.
What would your advice be to those interested in getting involved?
My advice would be to just do it. You won’t regret it. Taekwon-Do has many benefits, physical and mental. It can be done by all ages and abilities. Find a club near you and get stuck in.
