LEE MAGINNIS talks to HANNAH JOHNSON, player and coach at Lisburn Tennis Club and Wallace Park Indoor Tennis Centre.
Hannah’s mum was briefly a coach at Wallace Park, and a friend of manager Brian Cushnie, so Hannah had an early introduction to the sport.
Hannah first played tennis, aged four at Wallace Park summer camps, taking up the sport competitively, aged 10, and was coached by Adam Boyle. Currently her coach is Michael Ferguson. After playing a number of tournaments, Hannah was then asked to join the Ulster squad.
On her own coaching career: “I began assisting in summer camps for my club two years ago and then progressed to coaching last year. I enjoys passing on what I’ve learned and seeing my young charges improve.”
Why tennis? Hannah loves competing and also the social aspect of the sport.
Highs: “Getting to play for the Ulster squad and qualifying for the regional championships in 2023.” Hannah also won the U18 tournament in Bangor last summer! She enjoys match play and gym work, including weights.
Lows: “Early morning training before school, especially circuits.”
Other sports? “I used to play hockey and netball but stopped to put all my focus on tennis.”
Other interests: Hannah enjoys going out with friends, shopping and is learning to drive.
Food: “My favourite is Boojum burritos and I love Reece’s peanut butter cups!”
Studies: After A-levels, Hannah hopes to study psychology or sports therapy, preferably in the USA on a tennis scholarship.
