YOUNG Banbridge boxer Paige Nickels has achieved a knockout first as the only female from Northern Ireland to win a National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs (NABGC) UK title.
In the course of a remarkable week, 15-year old Paige, representing her local Banbridge Amateur Boxing Club, secured an Ulster title then went on to lift the Harry Cunningham Cup by a unanimous decision in a Beechlawn Hotel bill, followed by that UK title success, at 54K, defeating the English champion Ellie Spencer, again by a unanimous decision, at Bridlington.
In adding the UK title to her Irish championship, Paige created her own piece of history.
Banbridge ABC head coach Jason McKay underlined the significance, saying: “Paige has joined a prestigious group, as only a handful of boxers from Northern Ireland have ever claimed an NABGC title and being the first ever female from Northern Ireland to achieve this is something special. This National title will sit lovely alongside Paige’s other five Irish National titles.”
Jason also revealed a knock-on effect from Paige’s achievements in the ring, saying: “Paige’s inspiration on other females in the club hasn’t gone unnoticed. Five years ago, we only had two female boxers, including Paige, in the club and now we have 17 in training.
“Paige deserves every title she’s won, she’s a real role model for female boxing.”
