NORTHERN Ireland defender Rebecca McKenna has joined Women’s Super League club Birmingham City Women.
The 23-year-old, who has 43 caps for her country, has penned a two-year-deal with Blues Women.
She has moved to the Barclays WSL club from Women’s Championship side Charlton Athletic, for whom she played 25 times last season.
McKenna began her career at Glentoran before switching to Linfield. After winning three titles with the Belfast Blues she moved to England in 2021, signing for then Championship side Lewes Women.
She stayed with Lewes for two seasons before spending last season with Charlton.
Rebecca told the Birmingham City Women website: “I want to get in and get going now. I am excited to get to know the girls. For the long term this club is what it’s about.
“I had a chat with Amy (Merricks, Birmingham City Women’s head coach) and seeing where they want to take this club is what drew me in.
“I’ve been coached by her for a brief spell, but knowing the impact she had in such a short amount of time says a lot about her as a coach.”
McKenna’s switch to Blues Women follows fellow Northern Ireland defender Laura Rafferty’s move to Rangers Women from Southampton Women.
A handful of other Northern Ireland senior women’s squad players are expected to be on the move in the coming weeks, including striker Simone Magill, who has left Aston Villa Women, and attacking midfielder Caragh Hamilton, who has departed from Lewes after they were relegated from the Championship last season.
