Magnifique… 3-0 series win over France is Euro boost for Ireland hockey U21s, with six Ulster players on board

The six Ulster players who figured in Ireland U21 series win over France

IRELAND U21 hockey head coach Una McCarthy hailed her side after completing a 3-0 series win over France in Cork in preparation for this summer’s EuroHockey U21 Championships in Spain. All three wins were by two goal margins.

The successful outcome followed a disappointing three game series against Scotland in Glasgow which resulted in two draws and a loss for an Irish squad that included six Ulster players.

Coach McCarthy was much more encouraged by the performances again France, who will also be competing in the EHCs this summer. The series, sponsored by Goodbody, took place in Cork with two games being played at The Mardyke, UCC and the final match hosted by Mount Mercy College.

Una McCarthy said: “It was a really beneficial three game series against France, a great opportunity to see players develop and grow. I am delighted to get the wins, it’s important preparation in the build-up to the EuroHockey U21 Championships.”

The squad travel to Bisham to play a series against England later in June followed by the EuroHockey U21 Championships in Terrassa, Spain beginning on July 15.
