Kate O’Connor has realised her Olympic dream… Newry-born athlete will make Games debut in Paris heptathlon event

NI Commonwealth Games silver medallist Kate O’Connor is now confirmed as Paris bound for this month’s Olympic Games.

The Newry-born athlete will make her Games debut in the Heptathlon.

Kate booked her ticket through a points quota system and will be Ireland’s second ever Olympics heptathlete, and the first since 1972.

She will be the first multi eventer on the Irish team, since 1988.

Last year, the 23 year old competed at the World Championships in Budapest, finishing 13th in a high class field. The year before, she won a silver medal while competing for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, finishing behind England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Back in January this year, Kate smashed the Irish indoor pentathlon record at the World Indoor Tour event in Clermont.

Last month (below), we revealed how the Dundalk St Gerard’s athlete had edged close to her dream and now it is reality.
