All Ireland hockey league update… Ulster Elks overcome derby rivals Pegasus and move up to third in re-arranged game after Storm Darragh blowout

Railway Union celebrate Emma Smyth's late equaliser

ULSTER Elks defeated local rivals Pegasus 2-1 ay Queen’s in a re-arranged Sunday game after just one game survived Storm Darragh in the Women’s EY Hockey League on Saturday. Old Alex faced Railway Union in a battle between two sides keeping the pressure on Loreto at the top of the table.

An early goal from Old Alex saw them take the lead, Jessica McGrane going direct from the penalty corner to give her side the lead.

Railway Union responded to going down a goal, piling the pressure on the opposition, but the hosts held firm. However, in the final minutes of the game, Railway launched one last attack down the right side, finding Emma Smyth on the baseline to slot past the Alex goalkeeper, securing a point, and forcing the shoot-out.

Massive saves from both Lucy McGoldrick and Emma Maloney, kept things tight throughout the shootout, but Railway ultimately prevailed, thanks to goals from Sarah Hawkshaw and Sarah Patton.
