PEGASUS were the big winners in a reduced women’s senior hockey programme.
The Belfast side trounced Dublin opponents Avoca 7-1 to progress in the Irish Senior Cup while in the EY All Ireland league, Ards and Lurgan were held to home draws.
Katie McDonald was the Pegasus goal ace, scoring four of their seven goals.
Katie put Pegasus on their way, converting a penalty corner after just eight minutes and Sophie McDowell doubled the lead before the end of the quarter.
Katie completed her hat-trick with two more goals in the second quarter and one from from former Ireland international Alex Speers made it 5-1 at half-time.
Pegasus could afford to take their foot off the pedal in the second half but Katie McDowell still hadn’t finished her goalscoring exploits, adding her fourth and Pegs’ seventh after Emma Quinn had converted another penalty corner to make it six.
Queen’s University were big winners over Ballymoney, 5-0 in the Irish Hockey Trophy.
Ballymoney held out until the third quarter when Zoe Wilson struck from open play. Then the floodgates opened with fourth quarter goals from Jodie Simmons, Megan Cochrane, Eva Gaston and Alyssa Jebb completed the rout.
In the EYHL Pool B, Ulster Premier League Ards took on Leinster Division 1 side Muckross tie at Londonderry Park with nothing between thee the two sides in the first half.
Honor Powell gave the visitors the lead in the 44th minute from open play. Ards responded through Ailish Carson who converted a penalty corner in the 52nd minute to leave things level, 1-1 at the final whistle.
Elsewhere in Pool B, Lurgan were held to a home scoreless draw by University of Galway.
In the Eurohockey Indoor Championships in Galway, Ireland’s hopes of winning this competition suffered a hammer blow in the final match of the second day when they were held to a 5-5 draw by Slovakia in Pool A.
Slovakia took an early lead in the third minute when Martina Surinova scored from open play. Ireland equalised a minute later when Orla Fox tucked away a penalty stroke to make it 1-1. Jenna McCarlie scored again for Ireland in the 12th minute to make it 2-1. Mikayla Power added another goal to put Ireland 3-1 ahead and Laura Graham scored again in the 19th minute to leave Ireland 4-1 up at half time.
But Slovakia stormed back in the second half as Karolina Vyskocova scored in the 26th minute to make it 4-2. Sharlota Medvikova converted a penalty corner in the 28th minute to make it 4-3 to Ireland. Barbora Pucherova equalised for the Slovaks in the 36th minute to make it 4-4. Ireland looked to have won the game when Mikayla Power scored in the final minute. However Sharlota Medvikova converted a penalty corner just before the end to leave the final score 5-5.

The result was deflating after Ireland had earlier coasted to a 9-1 win over Portugal.
Chloe Brown’s converted penalty corner in the fourth minute gave Ireland the lead. Ireland went further ahead when they were awarded a penalty stroke and Orla Fox made no mistake to make it 2-0
Portugal got their first goal of the tournament in the ninth minute when Ana Nogueira converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1. Milla Fulton added a third for Ireland in the 11th minute and Sarah Patton scored in the 22nd minute to make it 4-1.
Milla Fulton converted a penalty corner to make it five in the 24th minute, her second of the match and Jenny McCarlie scored in the 25th minute to make it 6-1. Ireland were awarded a penalty stroke in 32nd minute and Orla Fox got her second of the match to make it 7-1. Ellen Robinson added the eighth in the 35th minute and Sarah Patton converted a penalty corner in the 40th minute for 9-1.

There was one game in the Legacy Ulster Women’s Premier League with Portadown beating Armagh 5-1. The result sees Armagh officially relegated to Senior One for the 2024/25 campaign.
