Going for gold… Derry’s Carleigh Irving boxes clever to reach European U22 Championships final in Bulgaria

Moment Carleigh secured silver in Sofia

DERRY’S Carleigh Irving will go for gold on European U22 Boxing Championships finals day after securing silver in a sensational semi-final display in Sofia.

Irving got a busy day for Ireland off to the perfect start with a brilliant final-four performance in Bulgaria.

The Oakleaf club 48kg operator came out on top in a battle between two quality operators to progress to the decider.

Carleigh won every round on every card against Lilla Szeleczk, although that doesn’t reflect the effort the Hungarian put in.

Irving had to produce her best form to overcome the challenge of the diminutive and skillful Szeleczk and more than earned her silver medal (at least).

Impressively Irving is now two for two in major International competition and has secured a medal every time she fought in an Irish vest.

Irving will take on Turkey’s Nursselen Yalgattekin in the opening bout of the Women’s Finals, starting at 2.00pm in Sofia on Saturday. October 19.
