THIS is the crash (above) that cost Newtownards competitor Erin McConnell a higher placed finish than a still creditable 18th at the 2024 World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki in Japan.
Erin and Hollie Elliott, from North East England, wrapped up the season for Team Ireland with Elliott, making her Team Ireland debut, securing 14th place with a time of 01:01:22, while McConnell placed 18th (01:02:48) in the race after her unfortunate crash.
Hollie Elliott was representing Ireland for the first time after a season of competing as a neutral athlete.
McConnell showed her strength in the swim, exiting the water on the shoulders of the race leader, with Elliott following closely behind. The duo was well positioned out on the bike with a large pack and stayed together throughout, despite several breakaway attempts on the 20km course.
McConnell faced a setback after her crash entering Transition 2, adding time to her transition. Pushing onwards, she completed the bike in 00:32:26 and crossed the line in 18th place overall to secure her best result at World Cup level to date. Elliott completed the bike split in 00:32:20 and produced a strong run to finish in 14th position.
