AFTER Cup success last year Malone Rugby club are going from strength to strength and looking to build on that success.
Starting from scratch in 2014 they now have 42 adults and 120 kids. Their teams start from age five and cater for all through primary school and then the club also have an under 12, 14, 16 and 18 before their senior squad.
Their stand-alone u16 side just made the Cup semi final and will face Banbridge in the coming weeks.
It’s not only their junior squads who are having Cup success as the seniors, who won the Women’s Junior Cup last year, are into the final on April 27th after defeating Queens.
Their senior players also help coach their minis and aim to be role models for the younger girls.
They’ve also had players move on and play for Ulster and Ireland in both rugby and also Touch& Ireland Tag teams, for example Neve Jones who played internationally.
”Neve Jones came through our youth system and she was the first female international we had, which was unreal
“The bar went mad when she made her debut, it was an unbelievable experience,” rugby chairman Dave Heron stated.
Neve continues to impress and now plays her club rugby at Gloucester-Hartpury while still competing internationally.
The club wants to continue to build on their success and are scouting new players for all squads, including their seniors who are sitting second in the league with a game in hand and are aiming to improve on their second place finish last year and grab top spot.
