Shock as Lisburn Distillery Ladies are withdrawn from NIWFA league

IN a shock move, Lisburn Distillery FC has withdrawn its’ women’s team from NIWFA football.

The club had appeared to be in a good position, only last month reaching the second round of the Local Women Sport Supercup and recently, player Rebecca Maxwell, spoke to www.localwomensport.com about her and the club’s hopes for the new season.

But, in announcing the withdrawal, the club pointed to the team’s failure to fulfil two league fixtures.

A statement, issued on the parent club Facebook page, read: “It is with regret that we have had to withdraw Lisburn Distillery Ladies from the NIWFA Division 2 2024 season.

“Despite our best efforts, this decision comes after we were unable to fulfil two of our recent fixtures and a further unfulfilled game would have led to expulsion from the league.

“After discussions with players and management, it is not possible to fulfil our remaining fixtures and therefore it is in the best interests of all parties, including the NIWFA and opposition teams, that we formally withdraw.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our players and management, as well as those who supported and helped our Ladies team from behind the scenes.”
