Jessica Foy says Glens are out to make amends in Women’s League Cup Final

JESS Foy says Glentoran will be out to make amends for last season’s Women’s League Cup final defeat as they bid to wrestle the trophy off holders Cliftonville at Seaview on Sunday (kick-off 3pm).

A first half double from Emily Wilson had seemingly put the Glens in control of the final before the Reds staged a superb second half comeback to run out 4-2 winners in the end.

It was a sore one for Foy and her teammates to take but the captain insists they have learned from last season’s heartache as they bid to end Cliftonville’s recent dominance of the competition.

“Yeah that definitely was a sore one. We had worked hard to get ourselves into a great position at half-time, we just needed to manage the game in the second half, said Foy.

“We knew Cliftonville would come out all guns blazing at the start of the second half and Caitlin McGuinness scoring so quickly after the restart put a different complexion on things.

“Their tails were up and when they equalised just past the hour mark it seemed to shift all the momentum in their favour.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to muster any real clear-cut chances and they scored twice late on to win the cup.

“It was a tough one to take but we have to learn from it and look at what we can do differently this year.

“Finals swing on goals and we have to make sure we manage the game better this time around.

“We are certainly looking forward to it and we want to make sure it’s us who are celebrating lifting the first piece of silverware this season come the final whistle.”

Glentoran and Cliftonville have been the dominant forces in the women’s game for the last few seasons with the Reds winning the League Cup the last three seasons in a row.

You have to go back to 2019 for the Glens’ last victory in competition but Foy feels they are coming into the showpiece final in good form.

“I think we have started the season well,” said the skipper.

“I know that’s the same for Cliftonville, who are only behind us on goal difference at the top of the Women’s Premiership.

“Sunday’s final will be the first time we have played each other so there’s a lot of anticipation ahead of the game.

“We know each other well and we have been battling it out for the honours over the last few seasons and it looks like this year will be no different.

“Both sides will be aiming to come out on top and bag the first trophy of the season as it will be a nice boost going into the remaining games.

“The Reds obviously have a brilliant record in the competition over the last three years, but we will be doing all we can to bring that to an end.”

Last season 1,189 supporters packed into Seaview to watch the final making it the highest attendance ever recorded for a women’s match in NIFL history.

Foy believes the record could be beaten this year and is urging fans of both clubs to get out and support their team.

“It was brilliant to see so many fans at Seaview last year, and even though we finished on the wrong side of the result they were treated to a brilliant game,” she said.

“Hopefully we can beat that record this year and treat the supporters to another great game of football.

“It would be great to see as many supporters as possible come along to the game. It really does make a difference to have a large crowd cheering you on and hopefully we can repay the Glentoran fans by bringing the cup back to the BetMcLean Oval.”
