Battling Portadown denied by Railway Union in EY Champions Trophy hockey semi-final at Garvey

PORTADOWN fought hard on the back foot from the start but lost out out 3-2 to holders Railway Union in their EY Champions Trophy semi-final at Lisnagarvey.

Railway made an ideal start to their title defence, Katie Mullan scoring inside the first minute to take the lead.

It remained that way until the break, but Railway began their second half in the same form as their first, with Sarah Patton finding the net this time to double their lead.

Portadown, however, showed no signs of letting up, pulling a goal back through Emily Adamson to set up a tense final quarter.

A third for Railway Union almost sealed their place in the final when Saoirse Griffin provided the vital final touch from a penalty corner, but Portadown once again responded with four minutes still to play.

Railway Union, however, managed to hold out to set up an encounter with Loreto, 4-0 winners over Pembroke, in Sunday’s final.
