GLENTORAN Women kicked-off the new campaign with a
professional 2-0 win away at Lisburn Ladies in the Boyle Sports Women’s Cup on
Wednesday evening.
Last season’s league champions were determined to start where they had left off
last term and took an early lead when Demi Vance finished off a good move with
only 12 minutes on the clock.
The visitors added a second in the 39th minute with Kascie Weir providing the
finish this time after more neat build-up play.
The second half was a tighter affair but Glentoran stood firm and were even
able to rotate the squad with several substitutions with one eye on Saturday’s
All-Island Cup tie against Bohemians.
It only took the Glens 12 minutes to get themselves in front at the Bluebell
Stadium as Jenna McKearney produced a superb touch and pass to pick out Vance
at the back post, who finished with aplomb.
The visitors doubled their advantage six minutes before the break as Aimee Kerr
produced a neat bit of skill before picking out Weir to slot home.
Glentoran held their two-goal lead going into half-time which gave them a good
platform going into the second half.
Manager Kim Turner shuffled her pack ahead of the hour mark with Jess Foy,
Nadene Caldwell and debutant Gracie Conway replaced by Clodagh Maguire, Kelly
Bailie and Rachel Rogan respectively.
The league champions were well in control in the final half hour and made
another change with 13 minutes to go as Ellie Butler replaced goal scorer Weir.
The Glens defence stood firm in the closing stages
to kick-off the Boyle Sports Women’s Cup campaign in style.
