IRISH League Premier side Glenavon are forming a Women’s Senior football team to play in the NI Women’s FA leagues during the 2026 season.
Announcing the move, the Lurgan club said: “This milestone represents a significant development for the club and follows the recent success of our Women’s Futsal team.
“This landmark also represents a significant achievement for both Glenavon FC and Lurgan Town FC, and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
Glenavon were trailblazers for women’s football in the early 1970s, long before organised leagues, their teams playing mostly friendlies and exhibition games.
Now they will step straight into the highly competitive environment of the NIWFA leagues as an addition to the women’s sides now affiliated to Irish League clubs.
