Lisburn AC’s Bryn wins in style at Irish Indoors

LISBURN’S Brynja Brynjarsdottir (pictured in blue) won the 123.ie Irish Indoor Combined Events U20 women’s title with a resounding victory in the final event, the 800m, where she opened a gap of nearly 10 seconds over her nearest rival in the race.

Earlier in the day, the Iceland born athlete competed in the 60m hurdles, the long jump, the shot put and the high jump, all within the top class (and warm) environ of Ireland’s National Indoor Arena. Northern Ireland still lacks such a facility for competition and training.

Brynja’s points total of 3560 was a new personal best.  Silver went to Ashleigh McCardle with 3403 points while Allison Dempsey took bronze with 3024 points.

It was double joy for Brynja’s City of Lisburn Athletics Club as Finn O’Neill won the men’s U20 gold.

Brynja is coached by former heptathlete, Wendy Philips, pictured below with her good friend Lady Mary Peters. and. of course. the four-legged companion who never misses a single training session at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast.
