ASHGROVE Ladies Social Soccer side, from Newry, welcomed Olympic gold medallist, Lady Mary Peters, on International Women’s Day weekend.

Lady Mary, who won Pentathlon gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics, watched the Ashgrove players go through their paces at Newry Showgrounds, posed for pictures, chatted and later cut a special International Women’s Day cake.

The event was organised by Ashgrove’s Maria Miller with Newry and Mourne council chair Pete Byrne also in attendance.

The club have 30 players on their books, aged from 23 to 65, training and playing regularly but with the emphasis firmly on fun and the social side of the game.
